Web-Conference: MBA Curriculum Reform in the Finance Discipline

The Aspen Institute Center for Business Education Web-Conference Series is hosting its 2nd online web-confernece on May 21, 2008, from 1pm-2pm EST. Email Alex.Roberts@aspeninstitute.org to RSVP or for inquiries.

Featured professor John Becker-Blease, Associate Professor of Finance, Washington State University, Vancouver, will be discussing WSU's recently revamped core MBA Finance Course, re-examining the role of stakeholders in corporate finance. The new course (a) covers a traditional slate of topics present in most corporate finance courses, (b) formally introduces students to the stakeholder and shareholder primacy models of the corporate objective function, and (c) demonstrates how understanding each perspective can improve their effectiveness as decision-makers. . Although training and disciplinary bias may incline some finance faculty toward a shareholder perspective of the firm, careful consideration reveals that a much more explicit treatment of all stakeholders is necessary to achieving any corporate objective, whether it focuses on the shareholders or the stakeholders.

The new finance course is a piece of the innovative work being done as part of Aspen Institute CBE 's Corporate Governance and Accountability Project .

Web-Conference: MBA Curriculum Reform in the Accounting Discipline

The Aspen Institute Center for Business Education Web-Conference Series is hosting its inaugural online web-confernece on April 29th, 2008, from 1pm-2pm EST. Email Alex.Roberts@aspeninstitute.org to RSVP or for inquiries.

Featured professor Jane Cote, Associate Professor of Accounting, Washington State University, Vancouver, will be discussing WSU's recently revamped core MBA Accounting Course, “ Accounting Measurement for Leaders ”, which explores how accounting information impacts not only strategic decision makers but also a firm's stakeholders. The new course examines how accounting information impacts not only strategic decision makers but also a firm's stakeholders. In the face of endless possible data collection, it is essential to assess what should be measured in order to assess performance and progress toward strategic goals, and most fundamentally, to look deeply at what we need to know about the credibility and implicit assumptions in the process of measurement itself.

The course, “ Accounting Measurement for Leaders ” is a piece of the innovative work being done as part of Aspen Institute CBE 's Corporate Governance and Accountability Project .
